Borobudur Hike

Borobudur Hike

Route

The hike from Borobudur to Suroloyo Peak in Central Java, Indonesia, offers an opportunity to explore the region’s rural landscapes, traditional villages and volcanic scenery. Suroloyo Peak, located in the Menoreh Hills, reaches approximately 1,019 metres above sea level and is known for its panoramic views across the surrounding countryside. On clear days, hikers may see Borobudur Temple, Mount Merapi, Mount Merbabu and the distant volcanic peaks of Java. The route passes through green hillsides, farmland, forested slopes and small settlements, providing insight into local rural life. The ascent can be steep in places, with uneven paths and changing gradients requiring reasonable fitness and suitable footwear. Many visitors choose to reach the summit via the established access route from the Suroloyo area, which includes steps leading to viewpoints. Combining cultural heritage, nature and mountain scenery, this hike is an appealing addition to a visit to Borobudur, particularly for travellers seeking a quieter outdoor experience away from Java’s busier tourist attractions.

The surprise for us was the little cafe at the top of the mountain serving great coffee using local coffee beans. Well worth it.
