St Kilda Rd/The Tan

Route

The Tan Track is one of Melbourne’s most iconic running routes, circling the Royal Botanic Gardens near the city centre. Officially known as the Tan, the approximately 3.8-kilometre loop attracts runners, walkers and fitness enthusiasts throughout the year. The track combines compacted gravel and paved sections, offering a scenic running experience with views of landscaped gardens, mature trees and Melbourne’s skyline. Popular landmarks along the route include the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Shrine of Remembrance and Government House. The course is particularly well known for Anderson Street, a challenging uphill section that tests runners’ strength and endurance. Its clearly defined circuit makes it convenient for interval training, timed laps and longer training sessions by completing multiple loops. The Tan is especially popular with local running clubs and athletes preparing for road races and marathons. With its central location, beautiful surroundings and accessible public paths, the Tan Track provides an excellent opportunity to combine exercise with Melbourne’s outdoor lifestyle and natural beauty.
